This Thursday June 8th at 6pm we will be joined by writers Fei Hernandez and Alexa Vasquez our incredible guest speaker for this month!! They are both contributors to the migrant anthology, Somewhere We Are Human (a unique collection of 41 groundbreaking essays, poems, and artwork by migrants, refugees and Dreamers—including award-winning writers, artists, and activists—that illuminate what it is like living undocumented today).
Alexa VAsquez: A Pisces, a writer, and an artist. Her visual artworks are inspired by Oaxaca. Her writings are memories of growing up in an immigrant household, leaving home, transitioning, and exploring trans womanhood. Alexa, a Voices of Our Nation (VONA) alum and a 2013 UndocuWriters Fellow, has been featured in Pariahs: Writing from Outside the Margins (2016), and the forthcoming anthology “Somewhere We Are Human” (HarperCollins June 2022). She graduated from Santa Ana Community College in 2020 with a degree in fashion design. She now lives in Corona, California, with her husband Ismael, and their four cats. Her first solo exhibit, “Cisne” is on view at The Garcia Center For the Arts.
féi hernandez (b. 1993, Chihuahua, Mexico) is a trans, Inglewood-raised, formerly undocumented immigrant. They are a writer, cultural worker, organizer, visual artist, birthworker, a spiritual practitioner and founder of Spirit School for the Divinely Gifted. féi’s mission is to decolonize the imagination by facilitating the empowerment and guidance of trans and queer BIPOC writers, artists, and healers alike, specifically by helping them harness their multidisciplinary, spiritual, and intersectional gifts. Descendant of the Raramuri, Pi’ma, and Cora peoples, féi is devoted to eradicating borders, deconstructing colonial impositions, and unearthing ancient codes for a safer world in the now to ensure the continual legacy of Black and Indigenous futures.
